The paintings of Adam Montegut.Β

"My paintings begin as exercises in world building. I am interested in exploration, both the imagined exploration of unfamiliar worlds and the more open-ended process of discovering a place, character, or narrative through painting.

The series grew partly out of my work as a tattoo artist. Initially, I thought of the paintings as a kind of source material: characters, landscapes, machines, and scenarios that might migrate into tattoos or spark ideas for clients I work with. In that sense, I began thinking of them almost as propaganda for imagined worlds. I wanted them to be bright, luminous, and seductive, images that might make someone want to enter the world they depicted.

But the paintings tend to wander away from their original plans. As I work, relationships develop between figures and environments, narratives shift, and something less tangible begins to accumulate. I'm interested in that point when an image starts to contain more than I deliberately put into it, when it seems to have a story outside the edges of the painting. I think of that quality as a kind of balled-up energy: something compressed inside the image that suggests a much larger world beyond it."
