The Satisfied Moon Eater- Original Painting

The Satisfied Moon Eater- Original Painting

What does it feel like to eat a moon if you enjoy eating moons? I imagine it’s quite satisfying.

I don’t know exactly where the idea of painting a Moon Eater originally came from. It has surfaced from time to time as a fleeting thought, sometimes capturing my attention more than at other moments. I love the idea of these mythical creatures, enormous in size, who roam the cosmos unseen by any of us, devouring entire moons. Terrifying and intriguing.

Interestingly, there is a creature in Philippine mythology named Bakunawa who was known to cause eclipses by swallowing the moon. Why would Bakunawa eat the moon? According to legend, it is to avenge the killing of his turtle sister. So how do people prevent Bakunawa from eating the moon? By banging pots and pans together loudly—because Bakunawa hates that noise. If you are ever in the Philippines during an eclipse, find some pots and pans.

So, I’m not 100% sure where the idea came from, but I’m glad it did because I have learned some truly interesting and fascinating things along the way.
