VALERIE HAWKINS

There are many ideas that I think about in relation to my work, but the main thought would be time and place.  My work is primarily done in white stoneware clay and decorated with a botanical motif of leaves and flowers collected from the gardens and fields around my home.  This palette is constantly changing with time and season as well as place.  This keeps my work connected to the ebb and flow of the environment around me.

I strive to enhance these ideas by the juxtaposition of opposites; hectic line against blank space, expanding volume against a contracting form, movement against stillness, shiny against matte. The end result will hopefully intrigue the viewer on many levels.
