MODERN AS FOLK

I began making these ornaments to have smaller, colorful items to accompany modern fine art woodturning pieces at art fairs. I’d been hand-stitching from a young age, learning embroidery from my grandmother as a small child, and dabbling in applique and crewel work in more recent years. What started out as a bit of an afterthought took on a life of its own as the ornaments gained in popularity. Early on I focused on traditional holiday-themed subjects, but found breaking the mold to be a lot more fun!

I start by creating a pattern, then draw, cut, press, and hand-stitch the pieces, and finally hand-sew and stuff each individual ornament. I hope it’s obvious by looking at them how much care and attention to detail goes into every ornament that I make. Knowing that my ornaments are being gifted and carry with them fond memories of loved ones, possibly over generations, is a privilege that makes a seemingly simple process incredibly fulfilling.
